Gliologists in Ljubljana 2011

Reported by Vladimir Parpura and Robert Zorec

The International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) satellite meeting entitled "Glial cells in (patho)physiology" (http://lnmcp.mf.uni-lj.si/) was held on August 24-27, 2011 in Ljubljana, Slovenia at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This satellite meeting integrated the emerging body of information that has been accumulating, revealing the interactive nature of the brain’s two major neural cell types, neurons and glia, in brain (dys)function. Twenty invited speakers from 12 countries presented the latest advancements in glial biology in health and disease. An additional five speakers were selected from the registered participants to present their work in the ´Emerging topics´ session. Registered participants also presented their work in poster sessions; two of the participants received awards sponsored by (ASN NEURO). This was a distinctly memorable event due to exemplary organization by the local committee (Marko Kreft, Nina Vardjan, Helena H. Chowdhury and Maja Potokar), an excellent scientific programme and well-crafted social events.

Neuroscience Peer Review Consortium

ASN NEURO is now a member of the Neuroscience Peer Review Consortium (http://nprc.incf.org). The Consortium is an alliance of neuroscience journals that have agreed to accept manuscript reviews from each other. Its goals are to support efficient and thorough peer review of original research in neuroscience, speed the publication of research reports and reduce the burden on peer reviewers.

Therefore if a paper is deemed inappropriate for one of the Consortium member journals, authors can submit their manuscript, together with the reviews, to one of the other member journals including ASN NEURO, for consideration.

New Senior Editors

We are pleased to announce that both Carol Colton and Vladimir Parpura have accepted invitations to become our latest Senior Editors for ASN NEURO.

Dr Carol A. Colton is a Research Professor in the Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center.

Vladimir Parpura is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurobiology, University of Alabama Birmingham.

My ASN NEURO Winner

Congratulations to Cinzia Dello Russo who was our 100th registrant to sign up for My ASN NEURO.

Cinzia, an Assistant Professor from the Catholic University Medical School in Rome, won a Giant Brain Cell Microbe to keep a watchful eye on her research.

Of her prize, Cinzia commented, "I hope it will not contaminate the ALL cell culture facility!"

Seen here, with her Microbe companion, Cinzia has been researching glial inflammatory activation and inflammatory-based diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (or EAE, the in vivo model for MS). A recent development in her laboratory has been to set up neuronal cultures and start looking more directly at neuronal degeneration and protection by different means.

Why not sign-up to My ASN NEURO and you could be our next winner!

F1000 evaluations - new free service for readers

We have reached an agreement with F1000 to make available each month three evaluations of articles from ASN NEURO from the F1000 website. These evaluations help to put the articles in context and provide opinion and perspective from leading researchers working in the field. In addition, we will include the F1000 Factor beside articles that have been evaluated by F1000 from ASN NEURO - highlighting how many of the Journal's articles have been selected and rated as important by the F1000 service.

December 2010

Special Offer!

Free one-year membership (Ordinary or Corresponding) of the American Society for Neurochemistry (ASN) will be granted to either the first or last author of all papers accepted for publication in ASN NEURO (provided they are not already members of the ASN and that they satisfy the criteria for membership).

Papers must be submitted by 24 March 2011.
